Acclaimed artist Ted CoConis, now 90, represented solely here at Lanning in Arizona, is flying in to unveil close to a dozen recent, and eagerly awaited, masterworks. For close to twenty years the gallery has forged a special relationship with this Illustrators Hall of Fame artist and the opening night for “Ted CoConis: Masterpiece” promises to be an important evening.
The opening artist’s reception will be on 1st Friday, May 4th, from 5:00-8:00 pm. Also, a special artist’s interview will be presented with our very own Dr. Jennifer Bryant Nagel, gallery co-owner, at 6:30 pm that evening and you are more than welcome to attend. This presentation is anticipated to be a substantive and fascinating look at the remarkable career and singular artistic vision of Ted CoConis.
Prior to creating his masterful works on canvas, Ted CoConis had gained fame painting iconic illustrations for film posters such as Hair, Fiddler on the Roof, Man of La Mancha and more, including the 1986 cult classic Labyrinth; his artwork appeared in every major magazine and his paintings graced book covers for Vladimir Nabokov, James Michener and other prominent authors. It was a legendary career that took immense fortitude to walk away from; but the pure artistic vision of Ted CoConis was strong enough to allow him to do just that.
A true artistic life has now been his for decades: When not painting in one of his seaside studios Ted CoConis can be found in Greece or Paris or sketching a masterwork in a Roman museum. Never at a plateau, never satisfied with simply what sells, CoConis works constantly to improve his techniques, to up his game, and his recent paintings are pure evidence of this. Ted CoConis has mastered the technique of layering near-translucent layers of oil paint one atop another until a viewer is convinced they see well beyond the surface of his canvas. The figures CoConis creates seem to live not entirely in our own physical world but in a world of their own choice and imagination. In his masterful, magical works Ted CoConis brings us reflections and reality, imagination and lyricism. His latest masterfully composed and meticulously executed works are of breathtaking depth and complexity.
Mark your calendar to attend this very special opening for “Ted CoConis: Masterpiece” on May 4th and enjoy a rare opportunity to visit with this celebrated artist. This exhibition runs throughout May 2018.
