Pat Woodall views the subjects he paints with an intensity that is felt in every canvas. His broad strokes and rich colors capture the movement and line, texture and shadow that define the true nature of each object and scene; it is not intricate details that concern Woodall. €œA storm doesn€™t always have to appear exactly like a stormy sky but it can feel like one because of the texture or shadow that I have created,€ he says.

Woodall captures scenes that define the rich landscape and heritage of the southwest. Always his paintings reflect a sense of place so visceral they seem to swell with a life-force that expands beyond the canvas. Woodall does not spend time sketching and refining his compositions, rather he sees and interprets. €œWhen I paint, it€™s totally hands-on. Sometimes I draw with my fingers, or I take the paint and dab and dot with it,€ he says. €œI like the way cotton canvas takes the paint off the brush and the way linen will grab paint and give me a rough effect. I like the rough, the unrefined. I guess it€™s my style.€

A childhood spent in Alabama contrasted with the open spaces and intense light Woodall found in the high altitudes of the west. Before he turned to painting fulltime, the artist worked as a designer and builder, skills that allowed him to build his own two-story log cabin with logs felled by his own hand. It is this background working with big, raw materials €“ stone, concrete, wood and dirt €“ that translates into his art. Each Woodall canvas is alive with raw color and movement, revealing the undeniable confidence and spontaneity of this artist€™s hand.
