When creating his own forms, whether a large outdoor commission or a smaller-scale indoor sculpture, taking care to understand what the viewer's interaction with the piece will be is of utmost importance. It is not my place to tell you how you should feel when you observe them, Saren says. However, I invite you, as the viewer, to have fun in exploring your association with my work. Sculpture is more than something to just be seen.
One of Saren's recent works is a sculpture located in the new Campbell Child and Family Center at Fort Lewis College. More recently, in the first week of 2007, the city of Durango, Colorado unveiled a Saren sculpture in front of City Hall following a win by the artist of a competition to design and create a sculpture commemorating the city's 125th anniversary. Saren describes his seven-foot-tall winning sculpture as a work of steel, of various patina, and copper; it consists of 125 parts, one for every year the city has been incorporated.
Today, Saren finds himself ever closer to filling his own estate with imposing metal sculptures - with continuing hopes of inspiring the next generation of artists.
